Report from Janet Kelsey

Janet Kelsey, a Physical Therapist from Camden, Maine, with over 30 years experience, spent six weeks at Rehab and the hospital OPD March-April 2000. She says:" I came to CMC-Vellore with the intent of helping out with patient care and to teach therapists how to use the balls and rolls which I had donated and which was a new concept in therapeutics for them.  I found the staff and students to be enthusiastic, eager to learn new skills, lots of fun and very helpful with translation and learning my way around.

Janet Kelsey with patient I was able to communicate fairly well with patients through touch cues, gestures and demonstrations but for more complex ideas I needed a therapist to interpret.
Since I had almost no experience with Spinal Cord Injuries I worked with the stroke and CP patients.  I was able to provide them with more one on one time than they would normally have received and as I am NDT trained I was able to teach the theory and hands on skills which the staff needed.  The challenge of my experience was coming up with compromise suggestions which were do-able in the Indian culture.  Both therapists and parents were open to new ideas and wonderful to work with.  I see the close family involvement that the Indian people have as a real strength when dealing with handicapped family members. The Vellore office in NYC was very helpful to me in arranging my stay."
